The lifespan of your garden shed can be prolonged if you develop a habit of maintaining that shed properly throughout the year. This article discusses some of the things that you should do on a regular basis in order to protect the timber garden shed from premature aging.

Monitor the Base

The base of your timber garden shed plays an important role in the longevity of that shed. For instance, an unstable base may cause the timber to warp. An unstable base can also settle and allow moisture to penetrate the timber of the shed. It is therefore very important for you to inspect the base of the shed regularly so that any issues can be detected early and fixed before it triggers a domino effect of other problems.

Treat the Timber Annually

Some inexperienced homeowners may think that it may not be necessary to treat timber if the timber supplier pretreated that timber. This may not be true because any timber that is exposed to the elements may eventually succumb to various problems, such as insect attacks, if that timber isn't treated regularly to protect it against those threats. Ensure that you use treated timber to begin with, but don't forget to continue treating the timber of your shed so that you prolong its life.

Keep the Roof Clear

Don't allow any tree branch to grow above the roof of your timber garden shed. Such branches can rub against the roof and puncture it. Moisture will then be able to leak into the shed and cause it to rot gradually. Trim any nearby trees so that the area around the roof is clear of any vegetation.

Reseal the Windows

The window sealant that you used when you constructed the timber shed may gradually harden and break off as it is exposed to the elements. This can create an avenue for moisture to enter the shed and cause the timber to deteriorate. Reseal those windows as soon as you notice that the old sealant has failed. You can use silicone or any other water-resistant sealant to keep water out of your windows.

You should inspect your timber garden shed every few months so that you address any seasonal issues that may come up. For more information, contact a timber supplier so you can make sure your shed is built with the best products. That supplier can also likely keep you informed about the latest products that can prolong the lifespan of your shed.
