When you notice an issue with your deck, such as a loose or rotted board, you may consider taking on the project yourself. This can be a cost efficient option as well as a learning experience. Before you get started with just replacing the board and calling the project finished, there are a few things you should consider. These items should be done in order to preserve your deck and maintain it from the start of the project and beyond.

Sand the Deck

You may be wondering why you should sand the entire deck for only one board. The truth is, if you have one board that is rotting or damaged, there may be more. By sanding down the entire deck you are able to notice any issues where water may be seeping into the wood timbers, nails have rusted and are causing issues or there are holes and imperfections causing problems. You are also removing any rough areas that may be causing issues as well. Another benefit is that you are prepping the deck for the waterproofing that will need to be done to complete the project.

Check the Foundation

It does not matter what type of foundation you have for your deck. If you are having issues with unevenness or with warping of your deck wood, then you may want to check the foundation. Certain posts may no longer be stable, there may be issues with sinking foundations if it is mounted to a cement base or there may be issues with wood rot on the posts in the ground. By checking this you may be able to avoid more costly issues in the future.

Consider Preventative Measures

If you have noticed a considerable amount of environmental damage, such as water damage or damage from fallen trees and limbs, you may want to consider some preventative measures to help maintain the deck. One of the steps you can take is to build a cover for the deck or add a retractable awning for smaller decks. This will not only protect the deck beyond what waterproofing and sealing can do, it will also give you an option for using your deck even in rainy weather. If you choose to go with a covered deck option, you may want to consider removable screens as well to help cut down on bugs during warmer months or increased cold during colder months.
